5 Things

In an effort to let you get to know me better, I thought I would share five things about myself that I don’t share too often with others. Consider yourself in my inner circle now.

1. I’ve appeared on MTV before. About six years ago, MTV was filming several concerts at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando. Gavin DeGraw was one of the artists lined up, and there was no way I was going to miss seeing him live in concert. My friend and I bought our tickets and showed up hours in advance of the show. When the doors opened, we raced towards the stage and managed to stand in the front row. A few months later when MTV aired the concert, friends called us to tell us that they had seen our faces on TV! Another fun fact, MTV combined the Gavin Degraw and Akon concerts so they could film them back to back. This meant that I was also in the front row for Akon and I actually got to touch him (MTV choose not to air this very special moment).

The hair. I know. Let’s just not go there, shall we?

2. I’m a creature of habit and still type thefacebook.com into the url box instead of facebook.com. For those of you that have been on Facebook for a while (or have seen the film The Social Network), you’ll know that the site originally started off as The Facebook but later on dropped the “The” from their name and web address. People have made fun of me for not changing with the times.

3. My dad grew up in the town of Bethany. My mom claims that this has nothing to do with the fact that my name is Bethany, but I tell people it does since I feel like it gives me some sort of significant meaning (the official meaning of Bethany is house of figs… whatever that means). I used to resent the name when I was younger since a lot of people end up calling me Becky, Brittany, or Stephanie by mistake. I still get people calling me by the wrong name, but I’ve grown to appreciate my name’s uniqueness and am happy to be different.

4. I don’t know how to set the clock in my car. This means that I never “fell back” an hour in the Fall for Daylight Savings and have been driving around with the wrong time displayed for the past six months. I also never reset my watch, but that’s just because I’m lazy. Thankfully, now that we’ve “sprung” forward, the time is now correctly displayed.

5. I avoid saying the word gesture because I’m not sure how to pronounce it. I always used to say it guess-cher until the age of 16 when I was corrected and told that it’s pronounced jes-cher (as verified by dictionary.com). The difference between a G and J sound is surprisingly noticeable. Whenever I go to say gesture now, I can’t remember which is the right way of saying it, so I avoid it all together.

Care to share any of your weird quirks or fun facts?

  1. Haha these were so cute! And I didn’t see The Social Network so I never knew it used to be The Facebook. I didn’t get it until a couple months into my freshman year (fall 05) so it was already well established by then.

  2. I totally forgot that it use to be “thefacebook,” hahaha, oh man! The early days of THE facebook. And #5, I can relate, I mispronounce byzantine, I always say BIzyantine, like bicycle, and use that argument when people correct me. Although now I know “biz” is the right way, but I still do it my way instead ;)

  3. I think having a unique name is so much better. Aside from the obivous points of individuality, it also means you will probably always be able to get your name as your email in whatever domain you choose, as well as dominating google. which is important.

also, thought you might like these meal photos, very minimalist, kinda cool:

  4. Such a cute/interesting post! I actually have an issue saying the word “pint”. Growing up I would always say it like “mint” so to this day every time I want to say it in my head I go “pint, mint, no pIIIInt” haha! Oh the way we remember (or forget!) words haha!

  5. I found your blog via Julie’s post on LDRs over on Peanut Butter Fingers–came here entirely because your name is Bethany and my name is Bethany haha. Anyway, I just wanted to comment on how I totally empathize with the name thing! When I was little I hated that my siblings could always find trinkets with their names on it, but I was lucky to ever find anything with “Beth,” let alone “Bethany.” I’ve also been called Brittany and Stephanie more times than I could ever count. In fact, I’ve had trouble at times when I’ve been in classes with people who are actually named Brittany or Stephanie because I just assume people are talking to me when they say those names! Haha.

And even though the literal translation of our name means “house of figs,” baby books like to say it means “house of God” or “disciple of God.” Personally I prefer to go with that rather than house of figs :P

Your blog looks great, by the way! I’ll have to add it to my list of Food Blogs I Read When I Could/Should Be Doing Something More Productive haha

    • I’m so happy to “meet” another Bethany!! And I’m totally going to start using the “house of God” meaning instead of figs! Thanks for reading!

  6. Love this list. Also, marry me Gavin DeGraw?

I love talking to my mom about how she chose Andrea for me. I always wish it were a better story :)

  7. hi! i started following your blog awhile ago, but i noticed that you stopped posting! hope everything is going okay !
