Arizona Hiking

Right smack dab in the middle of my job search drama, I had the opportunity to get away from everything for a few days and travel to Arizona on business last month. It turns out that some Vitamin D was just what this girl needed!

So truthfully, I haven’t seen much of the world. But I feel confident in saying that if I had seen most of the world, Arizona would make it into my Top 10 favorite places. I love the rocky landscape and deserts for as far as the eye can see. I know it gets hot there, but with no humidity, I don’t find it to be uncomfortable to be outside in.

I’m sure all the locals knew I was from out of state when I showed up wearing the drabby Seattle uniform of black.

Long sleeves and pants? This only lasted for a few minutes until I could quickly change into gym shorts and a tank top.

My work obligations were going to keep me busy nonstop Monday through Wednesday, so I flew down a day early on Sunday so that I could have a day to myself to do a bit of exploring. My first priority was getting outdoors for a hike!

The resort I stayed at is located at the edge of South Mountain Park, so it was just a short walk through a residential area to get to some hiking trails. I first stumbled upon a flat trail that followed the edge of the resort’s golf course which made for fun entertainment. Plus, there was plenty of beautiful scenery along the way (and thankfully no snakes).

Finally I came to the real deal hiking trails. After studying the trail map for a while and considering the amount of daylight left, I choose to do a short hike up Marcos De Niza Rock.

I could see all of Phoenix and the surrounding area from the top! Look, there’s Camelback Mountain, the hike I (half-heartedly) attempted last time I was town!

I was a little concerned about the heat, but since I had layered up on sunblock and came prepared with plenty of water, I was completely fine.

It was such a fun hiking excursion and I wish that I had more time to explore some of the other trails. I heard that there’s also a scenic drive that you can do through mountains too if you’re not up for hoofin’ it like these guys.

Too corny of a joke? Ah, well.

Be back later with a recap about the resort I stayed at and the food in Arizona!

  3. Arizona is the best place ever. But then again, I’m a little biased since I’m from there. ;) Tucson, which is just south of where you were.
